ROBERTO SCANDIUZZI

One of the last representatives of the Italian school of the great basses such as Ezio Pinza and Cesare Siepi, from whom he was profoundly influenced, Roberto Scandiuzzi is today considered by critics to be the best ‘noble bass’ on the international operatic scene.

He was initially a student at the Istituto Manzato in Treviso, where he grew up under the training of Anna Maria Bicciato and the guidance of Enza Ferrari, who would later follow him through his 40-plus years of artistic career.

In 1982, he made his debut as a young man at La Scala in ´Le nozze di Figaro´ under the baton of Riccardo Muti, with whom he would later be at La Scala for ´Macbeth´ and for several productions of Verdi's Requiem, which, with La Scala, he would take to Tokyo, Salzburg and Verdi's anniversary in the Church of San Marco in Milan.  He returned to La Scala with ´Lucia di Lammermoor´, conducted by Patanè, and with ´Oedipus Rex´ under the baton of Metzmaker.

His interpretation of the character of Fiesco in Simon Boccanegra at Covent Garden in London, under the baton of Sir Georg Solti, ensured him international success, leading him to perform the role of Fiesco in the most prestigious theatres such as the Metropolitan in New York, Opéra National de Paris, Wiener Staatsoper, Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, San Francisco Opera, Covent Garden in London;

where he would later be invited for other of his leading roles such as Philip II, where he would later be invited for other of his leading roles such as Philip II, which he would make his workhorse by presenting it in the most authoritative theatres and seasons of the world opera scene. .

His repertoire has led him to collaborate with conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Sir Colin Davis, Valerij Gergiev, James Levine, Fabio Luisi, Lorin Maazel, Zubin Metha, Riccardo Muti, Seiji Ozawa, Antonio Pappano, Georges Prêtre, Giuseppe Sinopoli, Georg Solti, Marcello Viotti, Daniele Gatti. His vast repertoire ranges from Verdi's bass roles to roles in the French repertoire with Don Carlos, Jerusalem, Juive, Samson et Dalila and in the Russian repertoire with Boris, Kavanshina, Oneghin; as well as from 'Scapigliatura' (Boito's Mefistofele) to 'Verismo' (Ponchielli's La gioconda).  

Also active in the concert field, he has collaborated with some of the world's most important orchestral ensembles, including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala, Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, Orchestre de Paris, Orchestre National de France, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, the Berliner Philarmoniker, always under the conductorship of the distinguished batons among the aforementioned names.

Major successes in recent years include ´Pelléas et Mélisande´ (Arkel) at the Florence Opera conducted by Daniele Gatti, ´Faust´ (Méphistophélès) at the Staatsoper Berlin, ´Aida´ (Ramfis) at the Opéra National de Paris and the Seoul Arts Center, ´Norma´ (Oroveso) at the NCPA in Beijing,´ Il barbiere di Siviglia´ (Basilio) at the Royal Opera House of Muscat, the Teatro San Carlo of Naples and the Grand Théâtre de Genève, ´Don Pasquale´ (title role) at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice, ´La Gioconda´ (Alvise) at the Teatro dell'Opera in Rome, ´Luisa Miller ´(Count Walter) at the New Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv, ´Don Carlo´ (Philip II) at the Théâtre du Capitole de Toulouse. His extensive discography includes ´Simon Boccanegra´ (Decca DVD), ´Don Carlo´, Verdi's ´Jérusalem´ and ´Aroldo´ (Philips), ´Requiem´ and ´Gioconda´ (EMI), ´Christopher Columbus´ (Koch), Rossini's ´Stabat Mater´ and ´Rigoletto´ and Dvořák's ´Stabat Mater´ (DDG), ´La Sonnambula´ (Nightingale), ´La Bohème´ (Erato), ´Macbeth´ (Sine Qua Non - DVD TDK), ´La Bohème´ (Erato),´ Macbeth´ (Sine Qua Non - DVD TDK), two recordings of ´Turandot´ (Decca and Nuova Era), ´Jérusalem´ and the only recording of Verdi's´ Requiem´ by Giuseppe Sinopoli with the Staatskapelle Dresden.

He has also dedicated himself to teaching for many years, has worked for 9 academic cycles with the International UIMP University in Madrid and has dedicated collaborations and masterclasses in the academies of Florence, Parma and Dresden.
