GIULIO CIABATTI

After multiple theatre experiences in different disciplines, he made his debut in opera directing with Lucia di Lammermmor. The opera was successfully received at the Center Performing Art in Osaka and the Bunkamura in Tokyo in 2003, and was revived in subsequent years at the Maestranza in Seville and in several editions at the Teatro Verdi in Trieste.

Madama Butterfly, which he has directed several times, has been staged not only in Italy, but also in Cyprus and Korea at the Seyong Centre in Seoul. In 2016 he signed the direction of ´Il barbiere di Siviglia´ for the opening of the Dubai Opera House. The production is also revived in many cities in Spain and the Canary Islands, where he also presents a new edition of Mozart's ´Cosı̀ fan tutte´. In 2018 he opened the Sapporo Arts Theater with ´Aida´ and in the same year signed ´La Traviata´ that was also acclaimed in many cities in Japan. He performed ´Otello´ in Trieste in two different editions directed by Nello Santi and Daniel Oren. In addition to operas from the great repertory, including ´Orfeo ed Euridice, Lucrezia Borgia, Adriana Lecouvreur, Tosca, Suor Angelica...´

He devotes attention to rarely performed titles such as Brecht-Weill's ´The Seven Deadly Sins´ and Bernstein's ´Trouble in Tahiti´, Menotti's ´La Medium´, Poulenc's ´La voix Humaine´, and Mascagni's ´Le maschere´. He collaborated alongside Yannis Kokkos, one of the most̀ great innovators of 20th-century opera theatre, on the staging of Cherubini's ´Medea´ in the ancient Greek theatre of Epidaurus and Szymanovski's ´King Roger´ at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo.
